TUI fly was established in July 1972 as Hapag-Lloyd Flug, and began operations on 30th March 1973 with its maiden flight from Hamburg to Ibiza. In the following years, the company conducted scheduled and charter flights mainly to holiday resorts in Europe with Boeing 727, Boeing 737, BAC 1-11 as well as long-range flights with Airbus A300/A310 to destinations in America and Africa. By becoming a subsidiary of TUI AG, Hapag-Lloyd Flug had been renamed into Hapagfly.

In the summer of 2007, Hapag-Lloyd Express (HLX) and Hapagfly merged to form TUI fly. The airline is a wholly-owned enterprise of the TUI Group, the world's leading tourism group with headquarters in Hanover, Germany. By the summer of 2018, TUI fly uses 36 Boeing 737 aircrafts to fly to 23 mid-haul destinations in 8 countries - seven aircrafts are being operated for Eurowings. TUI fly offers a high degree of quality for a fair price with characteristic reliability, punctuality and safety. TUI fly headquarters are at the Hanover Airport.

TUI fly is part of the TUI Group sustainability strategy 'better holidays, better world', where one of the commitments is to operate the most carbon-efficient airlines in Europe.
